Reminds me of this-"He who knows his destination and heads directly to it gets there quickly. He who knows his destination but takes the odd wrong turn along the way will still get there and be wiser for the experience." Peter Karsten.

Really like the whole idea of representing processes and relationships in this way. I have been told so many times that things have to be described mathematically, to be at all useful. Drawing a diagram to represent what is happening is almost like a middle ground between painting a mental picture with words and giving an abstract quantitative description. It can be an easily understood picture but also precise. Clever.

Re using it to describe space-time and hopefully find quantum gravity:Space-time is not where the cause of gravity is to be found IMO. Space-time reality has to be the product of observer fabrication of reality from recieved data. Which says to me that it only exists as something inseperable from the output medium. That could be a flat photographic sheet or a computer screen or the electrical activity of the brain, as examples.

The space-time Image might appear to have independent topology in space but it has no independent existence there is only the EM data from which it is generated spread within the environment.Which has a relationship to the source which produced it and what has happened to it prior to input to an observer. IE alteration resulting in part from the data's wave properties, and also resulting from distortion of the medium of transmission. The mathematics of space-time (and optics) describe different aspects of that appearance and how it will be altered under different circumstances. What will have independent existence is the Object or Source reality that provided the data from which it is produced. The many ways in which that can be described really is interesting to me.

That article reinforces my enthusiasm for learning more about this kind of representation. It might also be useful for teaching-leaning physics as it has the potential to cut out a lot of complicated abstract representation. And should allow easier cross over from other disciplines. Thanks for sharing that.

I will have to read his paper to get a clearer idea about this. It all looks intriguing though.

Sorry, but language, fundamental particle/wave, fundamental instantaneity, fundamental F=ma, and fundamental/real/true quantum gravity all occur in dreams.

I already proved all of this, AND MORE. The facts are the facts.

Excellent stuff. I believe most brains better comprehend and remember graphical representations. Have you yet made any connections at all with geometry, and the way it can pictorially describe relationships and more classical mathematical concepts?

I see a big advantage at the automatic 're-normalization' of mathematical abstractions, reclaiming connections with reality.

I've been making headway on pictorial representations of non-zero dimensional (real!) particles and 'plane wave' interactions over no-zero time to better model motion, it's effects, and derive classic observations from quantum interactions. Have you yet had any thoughts in that direction?

Unfortunately, quantum gravity is Not problem of language. Moreover, when simplification of "quantum mathematics"is connected with rejection of complex numbers existence it must be defined as cultural vandalism.Sorry.

This scheme sounds quite clever but emerges from specialized fields of mathematics that I have not studied - category theory was mentioned, for example. Having said that I applaud any visual illustration, or - as here - a graphical 'language' to deal with physical reality and processes. The diagrams are all in 2D however; would using 3D diagrams be an advantage here? As a physicist and artist who had also invented and used 3D drawing instruments I cannot help but think that a 3D approach would be helpful. In the 19th. J. C. Maxwell himself did - there is a reference in the Science Museum in London to a stereoscopic drawing he made of a curve in xyz space.

Hi Bob, I took a look at Quantum Picturalism

I think it is a marvellous way to make the subject accessible without loosing information. It is particularly interesting to me because I am (so to speak )one of those kindergarten kids.I would very much like to play with this kind of thing and have it produce the same answers as the conventional notation. Will take more time to fully understand what you have presented.However...

Something struck me looking at the cooking section. That was how clearly the temporal sequence of events is illustrated by the pictures. As simultaneous and consequent are part of the notation and no extra indication of time is required. Its like electric circuits, there are only two options series or parallel and various combinations of those options can be constructed. That might seem a trivial thing to pick up on but I think its such a nice way to think about what is happening.

I have talked a lot about passage of time being a sequence of iterations or arrangements but it is of course not just a single linear sequence as many events are occurring simultaneously . So there is that parallel aspect as well as the series aspect. Which can also then be thought of as cascades where many different series of events are happening in parallel and rather than being isolated from each each other there is interaction between them, crossings over from one cascade to another or joining together or separating of constituents.

In my mind that then becomes not just a wonderfully complex illustration on paper but something that would make a brilliant animation. Or better still a sculpture or interactive program that can be looked at from many different angles and scales to see what is going on overall or in parts. To make conventional mathematics into such a physical or digital sculpture might seem bizarre ( though having just said that i would quite like to do for that very reason) but the pictorial representation lends itself to it very easily. Material models of chemical and biochemical structures, (that can be manipulated and interacted with to see how it fits together or to change from one structure to another for example), are already familiar. This is similar as the forms used are simple. Also very cool is that it can be continually added to. Each new addition being the latest iteration. New colours or textures or coding of some kind could help show the change over time, like the different colours used in the MIT camera lab Femto photography.

Re. Kindergarten quantum mechanics: I think it would be brilliant to actually see if primary age kids can get to grips with quantum mechanics through this kind of communication tool. It is something very simple and natural and basic that has been made inaccessible by the language barrier. Kids are very receptive to learning new languages at an early age. Early introduction to this kind of thing could give a whole generation who have grown up playing with quantum mechanics through this kind of language, think of quantum mechanical ideas in a very intuitive way, and so are able to use them and communicate them with ease. How fantastic that would be.I think this also ties in with the discussion of overlapping art and science to aid communication. I can imagine all of these little kids painting their designs or doing potato prints to produce what appear to be abstract designs but they are actually communicating complex quantum mechanical ideas.

      Hi Po,

I think this pictorial language is different, not a substitute but something additional. It seems to me this language isn't about spatial or topological relations but about sequences of events and relations within and between those. The information transfer and alteration rather than locations and actions in space.I agree that how objects and data spreads through space is also important and quaternion (and some will argue Octonian )algebra can be useful for thinking about and communicating that.

Perhaps the idea of where all of this is happening will enter the minds of those familiar with the pictorial language who will then have the incentive to learn other languages in order to explore further.I do not think primary age kids (and most adults) in general could handle geometric algebra with ease unlike the pictorial language that was discussed which seems far more accessible, as it is less abstract and more intuitive.
