Essay Abstract

In the days of our fathers, people lived stress free life. Earth and those in it managed its resources well and tried to be considerate in whatever they do to it. Only few things harmed the earth. They made the earth realize its full potential and life was threat free. Things changed so fast that everyday news carries disparaging remarks about what happens in few decades that humanity fails to do something rightly. What has man done to deserve his name being mentioned often and on as being responsible. He has done a lot. Man has failed to live a sustainable life. Man has continued to fight natural resources, hoping he has the power to change the aftereffect? What has resulted to this? Threat of earth and life therein. This essay captures these and modestly provide a practicable solutions to them as listed. It concludes with a way forward that if we put up a hard fight for preserving the earth, we will win.

Emmanuel Ugokwe is a Nigerian writer, trained film producer, essayist and a journalist. He has won over 30 awards in the last 6 years. He heads many organizations like SIA Africa, PAYF Nigeria, SYNW Southeast South south coordinator, southeastern chaperon for Premeptive international project, IFMA Initiative, Lifeline Foundation, Racetothetop and others. He is currently a student journalist intern with Iafricash media Lagos Nigeria a student of Journalism and Mass Communication Sikim Manipal University Ghana.

Dear Emmanuel

It is indeed very difficult to see that "we have the paradise here with us" when are observing our planet and the nightmares that are occurring all around us.

I cannot agree with you that the world of our fathers was a "stress free" one , my father was a Canadian soldier that came here in Europe to liberate us from the Hitler, this was not at all stress less, wars have been around our earth ALL the times , see the history books. Mankind is a dualistic kind that has always TWO goals WAR an PEACE, Black and White and so on, we will never be able to escape this dualistic nature, but we can strive to use the energy between these poles to go further and to obtain a better MENTALITY.

The image you begin with is transformed by the hope represented in your final image. As you suggest, dry rot is only being painted over for show, maybe more subtly in advanced countries, but the result is the same.

Each of us can make a difference but it must be a common cause for common good. That is my theme as well.

Before I rate how your essay relates to steering the future of humanity, I would like to ask how what you wrote becomes broadly actionable?

My interpretation is you are saying everyone "should be" ethical.

Most people I know do not care about the future. I do. But without something that can implement change the tendency is to act based upon short-sighted self-serving agendas.

People most commonly do not think further than one month into their future. Sustainability is based upon the least effort to support one month of sustainability with little concern for anything beyond their family and friends.

I see charity organizations for feeding starving children. Technology is brought in with no concern for the surrounding ecology. As a result the population is increased beyond what the local ecology can support, and technology is used to destroy the local eco-system. More people, and about the base number of starving children continues unchanged, but now with a larger population they must import food from corporations.

The population is sustainable, but not the local eco-system.

Very nice essay. No vindictiveness, no hostility, no self-righteous selective blaming, no scheme for herding others into service to construct an ideological 'human-ant-hill' in a misguided effort to 'fix-the-world'. Your love for your fellow humans is your most important tool. Science is composed of humans. If your message improves humans, it will also improve science. I think you have shared a needed attitude for the future.
