Jorge Cham received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, and was a full-time Instructor and researcher at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from 2003-2005. He is the creative force behind the much loved PhD Comics. John Preskill is the Richard P. Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech, co-directing the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter (IQIM). Spyridon Michalakis is a mathematical physicist at IQIM, as well as the Manager of Outreach Activities for the Institute. He studied math at MIT and Physics at UC Davis, where he received his PhD in Applied Mathematics.

As a big fan of PHD Comics, it is great to see this video in the contest. To do a 6 minute animation about the very abstract subject of quantum computing is quite a feat, since it is far from clear how one can visually represent quantum computers and quantum computation! You did a great job, with simple cubes connected by waves, and your final "there's a whole quantum world out there" image is very good (as are all the final images of the videos you submitted). I also quite like the image used to illustrate superposition: the "1" guy and the "0" guy sitting in the lotus position on either side of their little planet-particle... Congratulations!

People are excited about the powerfulness and possibilities of the quantum computing as we are human beings who try to compare new achievements with what we knew before. But the main achievement which is developed by quantum computing is that from now we can talk about the duality of the universe (in its simple representation by Descartes) with more definiteness and rationality. The theory which would be able to fulfill the gap between our comprehension and what is surrounding us on the cosmic-microphysic scale with real state of matter is still arranging by progressors who I believe will move forth mankind and will get all things around it. Remember that Descartes proposed the rational definition of corporeal reality and other almost 500 years ago. Rene Descartes concept was on the philosophical basis. Then Vlasov constructed physical basis of the Many-World concept at the end of 40th of the XX century. Then Everett constructed mathematical basis of the Many-World concept in the middle of 50th of the XX century.

Fundamental questions raised by the video content. Is it appropriate to use de Broglie wave conception to explain and describe the depth of quantum universe? De Broglie wave is only a part of mathematical planetary atom model presented by Perren-Rutherford-Bohr. Such wave is served as orientation (guiding line) which helps to define stationary orbits of the electron. If there is an integral number of de Broglie wavelengths in the orbit then this is a stationary orbit. When the electron spins with centripetal acceleration on such stationary orbit around atomic nucleus, the electro-magnetic law by Maxwell is broken (energy is emitted when a charged particle moves with acceleration). Remember an antenna of a transmitter in a wire of which charges move with acceleration now towards one direction, now towards other direction. The Force Moving Electricity appears in the distant wire of a radio receiver's antenna now towards one direction, now towards other direction.

De Broglie wave is not suitable instrument because there is the discrete incommensurability between the rational section which is equal to the length of de Broglie wave and closed orbit of the electron which orbit has irrational "length". The modern atom model is composed of the electron which appears now within the definite place from the physical vacuum, now disappears from the same place. The modern atom model represents that the electron does not moves in an orbit, and, therefore, does not break a law of energy emission produces by accelerating charge. Thus, continuous "orbit" is substituted with the discrete set of annihilation-renihilation of electron, which is resting after appearing from physical vacuum (or nihil, Logos, Ungrund, Gottheit, chaos, Absolute, dao, nirvano, zurvano, ...).

Another fundamental question is what is the force field like? What substance is used to construct "the wall of the force field"? Well, the force field is mathematical model. For example, mathematical model of electro-static force field is being constructed like this: (link to ....). First, parameter of interaction of two charged bodies is measured with the help of the weight, the ruler and the protractor. The source of electricity is the etalon of normal cell (battery). Calculated parameter is called Coulomb Force (FC), quantity of electricity is called the charge (q). Then calculated FC is divided by calibrated q and given value is called electric-static field vector (Р•= FC/q). Unit quantity is [Newton/Coulomb]=[Volt/meter]. The second case is more tightly closed with etalon battery (value of electromotive force of the etalon battery is measured with Volt). Much time has flowed and even the specialists became to believe that the substance like electro-static field exists although this is only a mathematical model of parameter of interaction of two bodies forced by source (sources) of electricity.

Magnetic field is the mathematical model too that shows the parameter of interaction of two wires connected to the battery (batteries).

From the point of the modern development of study of substance and electricity the primary concept is quantity of electricity, which has unit Q or q [Coulomb]. The concept of strength of electrical current is only the result of using of the mathematical operations. First, geometry is used to define cross-sectional square [m2], through which the electricity flows. Then the time interval delta t is used to calculate in the framework of classical conception the quantity of incorporeal electric fluid delta q passing through the cross-sectional square. Then it is necessary to number the discrete charges passing the cross-sectional square in time interval delta t in the case of Faraday's model. Faraday suggested the concept of positive discrete charge for metal conductors after electro-chemical experiments with electrolytic solution.

Then current strength can be calculated as I=delta q/delta t. Instantaneous current strength can be found via time differentiation i=dq/dt. So current strength can be called only secondary concept. The concept of magnetic energy, absorbed voltage, etc. are far away from primary concept.

Electro-static force (Coulomb force FC) is the secondary concept too and can be calculated by experiment. Electric field vector (E) is the product of division of FC by q and that is the tertiary concept. Potential is the product of scalar multiplication of E by displacement vector S that is the quaternary concept. Potential difference, electrical energy, etc. are further away from primary concept.

Faraday and Maxwell broke the dominance of the force terminology in the study of substance and electricity. Faraday introduced poetical field concept. Maxwell introduced the concept of electric field strength (E) and magnetic field strength (H). Note one more time that Р•=FC/q is the vector that this is the product of algebraic operation of dividing vector value into scalar one. Vector E does not exists, this is not "real matter".

Vector H is also the result of mathematical operations which applies to Ampere Force calculated by experiment using Biot-Savart-Laplace law.

Let's show it with the help of an expression for the elementary Ampere force

Show formula with indexes accordingly to 1 wire and 2 wire:

Magnetic inductance vector B2 is defined by the current in the wire 2 and by the geometry of the wires arrangement (1 and 2). Magnetic inductance vector B2 is calculated with the help of BSL-law applied to the wire 2:

Obviously, that elementary vector dР'2 is the product of the mathematical operation to current strength I2 in accordance to wires arrangement (1 and 2). While integral of BSL-law is taken then the formula for the elementary Ampere force can be made up.

Here we find current strengths in both conductors and their geometrical arrangements. Vector B is connected with vector H as B=mu mu0Рќ. Obviously that both vector E and vector H do not exist; they are not "real matter".

Obviously that concept of electromagnetic field is only a mathematical model which contains two orthogonal vectors E and H. Therefore electromagnetic field is not also "real matter". Thus, reasoning and mathematical models whose are based on the macroscopic concepts of the Force, Field, Potential, etc., are not fully suitable to the quantum objects.

What electron tunneling is? What medium does electron tunneling happen in? What medium does electron tunneling happen through? Simply this is mathematical model to describe effect impossible for classical mechanics. The particle has no enough energy to overcome the mathematical barrier, but particle "passes" mathematically through it anyway. The model effect of tunneling indicates one more time that macroscopic concept of power is not fully suitable to apply in quantum universe. Remember that macroscopic concept of power is produced by elementary work formula when a force acts upon an object to cause an elementary displacement of an object (dA=F*dS).

    Power unit is Joule=Newton*meter. This is a parameter of the weight and the ruler. Any force can be calibrated with weight, any Force unit is Newton. Displacement unit is meter.

    Ok, let's go forth. Mesoscopic physics addresses down to nano-scale (cluster). There are concepts of the conductor, dielectric, superconductor and etc. using in mesocopic. Such objects as conductor, dielectric, superconductor and etc. are macroscale objects which are based on the Ohm's law. Ohm's Law has been found experimentally.

    Maxwell used differential form of the Ohm's law to set up his first equation of his famous system of equations.

    Here j is the vector current density vector, sigma - specific conductance of the conducting medium.

    Write down the first equation of the Maxwell's system of equations:

    Here, the curl of the vector H is the mathematical operation and makes sense as the multiplication of the electromotive force by the conductivity. As we remember electromotive force is that which tends to cause current strength (force) with different densities in the different media.

    Let's clear the physical parameter of those media and show the first Maxwell's equation in one of the multiple forms printed in the text-books.

    Here "con"-index is conducting matter, "diel"-index is the ideal non-conducting matter, "vac"-index is the ideal medium where there is no matter in any of forms. The absolute value of the current strength density vector has unit [Ampere/meter2]=[Coulomb/(sec*m2)].

    Obviously, if the concept of the current strength density (j) for a medium is used, the free charge carriers must be in the medium. Else the Coulomb unit is unsuitable.

    Both Maxwell's ideal dielectric and especially Maxwell's ideal vacuum cannot have, by definition, free charge carriers. Maxwell called jvac and jdiel=(∂D/∂t) as fictitious current density.

    Here electric induction is D=epsilon epsilon0Р•, where epsilon is relative dielectric permittivity of the medium and epsilon0 is the electric permittivity.

    When Maxwell formulated his famous system of equations on the basis of the experiments by Coulomb, Oersted, Ampere, Ohm and Faraday, he (Maxwell) warned repeatedly his followers. Maxwell said that the unit of the vector of the current density has physical sense only in conducting media. Such conducting media must contain electric fluid (or Faraday's discrete charges). The vectors of current density are fictitious in the media (dielectric and vacuum) without free charge carriers. Maxwell warned that there are not a formula which can be deduced from Maxwell's system of equations. There are not a formula which can be tested by an experiment.

    After century Maxwell's warnings were quite correct because multiple working formulas in electric technics, radio technics, electronics, etc. were being obtained by experiments or oversimplified assumptions while using Maxwell's system of equations with fictitious values.

    Even the classical formula of the charge-to-electron mass ratio contains resistance of the vacuum diode R, which is connected in the experimental Ohm's law with voltage drop U across cathode-anode of the vacuum diode.

    (e/m)=alpha/(UR2),

    Where e is the electron charge, m is electron mass in the vacuum, alpha is constant. Thus, even the fundamental (e/m) ratio is not deduced from the Maxwell's system of equations. The fundamental (e/m) ratio is empirical formula which uses parameters obtained with the help of empirical Ohm's law.

    When J.Bednorz and K.MГјller were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize it was become clear that superconductivity in multi-compound ceramics at temperatures higher that the liquid helium cannot be analysed with the help of Ohm's law.

    High-temperature superconductivity (high-Tc) in the ceramic ring is reported to be due the impulse of the external electromotive force, which is applied to the coil of the high-Tc ring. The existing of the high-Tc enables the materials to levitate with no time limit above horizontally laid high-Tc ring. When external impulse source of EMF is switch off of the coil of the high-Tc ring, there is no any inner electromotive force, that is epsilon =0. Zero electrical resistance of the high-Tc ring would be both its internal resistance (r) and its external load (R), that is R+r=0. While high-Tc ring is closed electrical circuit, let's apply Ohm's law on closed loop, that this is I=epsilon/(R+r). There is I=0/0 in such case.

    Obviously, if macroscopic concepts such as electromotive force, resistance and current strength (joined by Ohm's law) are applied on closed circuit of high-Tc ring, then we get physical absurd. We have obtained that interaction between object (ferromagnetic) and "electricity" (impulse of EMF on ceramic high-Tc ring) are seen by the naked eye. We have obtained that "mechanical" experiment can help to calculate the real force of interaction between ferromagnetic and high-Tc ring. But we have obtained that if someone applies the classical secondary and tertiary values such as I, epsilon , R and r, then we get physical absurd. Therefore, it is inadmissible to use macroscopic approach both to high-Tc phenomenon which is manifested itself as mesoscopic scale clusters in the macroscopic ring and to quantum (microscopic scale) objects.

    Ask ourselves what is wave function ОЁ? Wave function is the statistical function of probability distribution to find quantum object within some point of the space, which has some quantum parameters. Wave function is the statistical concept. Wave function is the irrational concept because formulas containing wave function has irrational number such as pi, e, irrational concepts such as d, partial derivative or integral. Irrational, nonintegral and approximate results are produced with the help of formulas containing wave function.

    As we can see, it is insurmountable difficulties to apply macro-concepts to micro-scale. Let's go forth. Bit is a dual information about an object or an event. "0" means that an object or an event are irrational; "1" means that an object or an event are rational. What information concept does perform the information about image (pattern)?

    A bit performs closed system containing two numbers such as '0' and '1'. Quantum bit (qubit) has multiple states. A qubit is the three-dimensional torus. A qubit is absolute free inside torus. Obviously, that the number of qubit's states is much greater than two states of a bit. Three-dimensional quantum torus performs vorticity realm (in the framework of Descartes-VAG dual universe model) to the best way.

    Thanks a lot for a video creation. It shows more than ever what the fundamental question is and . Concepts should favour the comprehension of the universe duality, the diffusion the knowledge about the extension realm and vorticity realm, which are exchanged both "bits and qubits" across the physical vacuum. The scientific paradigm as cosmic-micro-physics alone with principle "All objects of a system involve a nonlocal collective cooperation with all objects within the same system or in other systems" (Descartes-Mach-Vlasov's principle), alone with concept of nonlocal statistical vorticity interactions can shift science to the new scientific generation.

    The step "to touch the future" is Vlasov-Maxwell's system of equations, which made breakthrough from single-particle to the systems of many particles representing by statistical distribution functions.
