Video Description

This video poses a question about two differing ideas about the beginning of our universe: 1) that our Big Bang is the other side of a white hole and 2) the theory of cosmic inflation. I look forward to hearing how the wonderful FQXI community thinks about these ideas.

Schatzie Dudee is a mom to four kids, ages 12-18 years old. She is an avid science and physics enthusiast who tries very hard to engage her children in all the magnificence of our natural world. She has been called a "citizen scientist," which is one of the nicest things anyone has ever said about her.

Schatzie, Neena and Serena,

Your video was fun to watch and raises very interesting questions. No one really knows what happens at the very high density (around 10^93 kilograms per cubic meter) that characterized the Big Bang, so it is far from certain that the fact that the Big Bang was very uniform rules out the possibility that it was preceded by the contraction of a very non-uniform previous universe. In many cyclic cosmological theories, the Big Bang is preceded by such a "Big Crunch", and, in some sense, we could say that the Big Crunch is the formation of a black hole, and the Big Bang is a reverse black hole, or white hole (that was the conclusion of Isaac's Asimov book about black holes, if I remember correctly). Now, if you add inflation to smooth out any initial irregularities of the Big Bang, it is even less a problem to have our universe descended from a very non-uniform Big Crunch!

Good luck in the contest!

P.S. If you have a chance to view, comment and vote on my trilogy of videos entitled "This Is Physics" --- where I try to convey the "fun of physics" by focusing on some of the greatest moments of its history --- it would be quite appreciated. Only one week left to vote! (Don't forget just before voting to enter the author code FQXi sent you, so your vote properly registers in the community category.)

Dear Schatzie,

I enjoyed watching your video and I thought the aesthetic you chose for the film footage was cool. Reading a bit further on the subject I found this article here, providing evident proof for the pure banana smoothie hypothesis aka cosmic inflation (if I understood your analogy correctly) - which is amazing since it brings us one step closer to the question how the universe was created. What do you think about the findings? I would love to hear your perspective :)

I wish you good luck and hope you find the time to check out our video!

    Hi,

It is inspiring how you integrate your family in a science project such as this video. This is the kind of stuff that will pay off amazingly in their future.

I would remark that some of the statements were too strong, such as "the matter swallowed by the black hole needs to go somewhere". I'm not saying that it doesn't, but the claim is a bit rushed.

This is a beautiful problem. In order for one to truly grasp what happens close to singularities, one needs to understand quantum gravity, which is the perfect segue for my shameless advertising. ;)

Feel free to look up our video, in which we discuss what is quantum gravity, present an existing solution and give examples of applications and future directions:

It is meant to inspire people, so show it to the family!

    Cheers!

Thank you so much, Madeleine! Have a great day!

    Best regards,

    Schatzie and kids

Thank you, Teresa! I just voted on your video. I hope you're having a great day!

    Best regards,

    Schatzie

    Hi Schatzie

    (Done)

    Can I ask you something?

I did a little tagging in all the videos in this contest.

One of the classifications was - age appropriate, kids, teans, etc.

Can we compare notes and make this list together?

I'm also planning on opening a group in Facebook, invite everybody in, to post all our videos, an ask people to put their own.

    What do you think?

Hoping to hear from you soon.

    Teresa

Count us in!! Yes, my daughters are 12 years old (twin daughters, Neena and Anjali) and Serena is 16 years old.

Very interesting concept to do a video on accompanied by an enjoyable style!

If you get a chance, I'd appreciate it if you gave our video a watch and rated it too!
