Essay Abstract

When evaluating morality, there are two principals of ethical theories that can be contrasted. These theories are deontological ethics and teleological ethics. While teleological ethics focuses on moral acts in order to achieve some sort of end, deontological ethics argues that morality is an obligation and is not reducible to a creation of good consequences. Given these distinctively opposite characteristics, it is obvious that when viewing morally relevant situations that the methods of approaching them will conflict as well. Not only will these differences depend on the deontological or the teleological ethicist point of view, but opinions will also vary when surreptitiously observing the egoist, the altruist, and the universalist.

Dear Philosopher Muldier,

Please excuse me for I do not wish to be too critical of your fine essay and I do hope that it fairs well in the competition.

Only nature could produce a reality so simple, a single cell amoeba could deal with it.

The real Universe must consist only of one unified visible infinite physical surface occurring in one infinite dimension, that am always illuminated by infinite non-surface light.

A more detailed explanation of natural reality can be found in my essay, SCORE ONE FOR SIMPLICITY. I do hope that you will read my essay and comment on its merit.

Hi, I liked this essay a lot, and one reason is that I think yours and and mine are complementary in many ways. The presentation is excellent. Thanks for the great job on it.

Dear Muder H. Moldier,

Your essay does a great job in presenting alternative approaches to ethics. It ought to be required reading for all those neuroscientists, psychologists, and evolutionary theorists who are busy trying to derives ethics from science. However it does not seem to relate closely to the FQXI essay theme: how can this arise out of physics?

That link is provided by the fact that ethical stances act in a top down way to affect all lower level thought processes by setting the limits of what can be regarded as acceptable and non-acceptable actions (I outline how this happens in my book How Can Physics Underlie the Mind?), which psychological processes are then instantiated at the lowest level through ion and electron flows mediated by biomolecules, as I describe on my essay.

Thus I believe your essay fits in nicely with my own, in terms of providing an analysis of key higher level thoughts and concepts that drive the whole.
