Sidi Cherkawi Benzahra is a professor of physics at the Joint Science Department of the Claremont Colleges. He obtained his PhD in high energy physics from the University of Minnesota in 2001 and taught physics at Wittenberg University, North Dakota State University, California polytechnic State University, and at the Claremont Colleges.
In my French opinion, US Citizens do believe in Time as a Goddess. This is why I was wondering if I would find here somebody at last recalling that 'Time algebraic standardization' made of a dot on a line or a circle is just an 'approximation', a tool, and has no physical basis. And you are not far away. The more obvious 'Time ideology' is in 'Probability Theory' on which Quanta Physics is grounded.
In my own essay ('Square Wheels or Real Dynamics') I am logically concluding that the today gigantic Large Hadron Collider experience has more to do with this Religion of Time than with Science, that the mystic 'Wave' (Here Algebra is coming back to Poetry from where it comes) of the particle has nothing to do with material things.
What is rather funny to me is what you say about R. Descartes. His statement about Infinity is only a memory of what he learned at School of La Flèche in his young years because all his 'algebraic Geometry' (as he says) is based on the Infinity idea.
And therefore you are criticizing Descartes exactly on the key point where you both are wrong! Because your 'pizza example' proves that 'Infinity' and 'very big number' is the same for you as it was for Descartes. For example Descartes does not make the difference between 'absolute' (infinite) speed of Moonlight and very very high speed of Moonlight.
And here we are! Because here is the 'tangent' between Matter and Idea and the reason why nearly four centuries after the paralogism of a particle made of both wave and material is 'logic'. Everything was in Descartes books already: 'Quantas physics', that is to say a new attempt to square the circle, paradox of a light that has a speed but has not, and even 'string theory'.
I read your essay late because I am someone who asks for serious consequences rather than philosophical eels.
I will read it very carefully again because it complements my suspicions. If something is definitely wrong, then it must not be justified by seemingly compelling but wrongly founded interpretations of experimental "evidence".
