FQxI's Natalia Ares shows us around her physics lab at Oxford University, UK, in this film by Geoff Marsh. Her team is using carbon nanotubes to test the laws of 'quantum thermodynamics'—a new area of research that investigates how the laws of heat and energy exchange may need to be modified when describing tiny machines operating on the microscale. The experiments have implications for the development of efficient nanodevices for quantum computing and also for understanding the origin of the arrow of time.
