This excellent essay (that I was happy to favorably grade, btw) presents a particularly thorough and compelling case that quantum effects—long assumed too fragile for biological environments—are not only present in life’s processes but essential to them. I agree completely and wonder if you might also share my view that quantum indeterminacy (i.e. intrinsic randomness) might play a non-trivial role in the process of biological evolution itself? That is, since quantum processes are predominant in the molecular substrate of biology, couldn’t intrinsic randomness influence the creative/productive emergence of genetic variation in ways that classical models overlook? In other words, that quantum effects are central not just in the structure and function of biological machines, but also in shaping the evolutionary pathways that gave rise to them?
