After trawling through several rather 'florid' essays here I was initially put off by the metaphorical flourish of "Life’s chemistry unfolds in a riot of vibrations..." and thought 'gods please not another one!' However, this essay shifts straight into logical gear with its guiding question:

does invoking specific quantum structure explain something better about function than any classical account constrained to the same observables and resources?

Followed by a brief executive summary of what appears to be a rather interesting proposal for an experimental program which would itself make for a rather interesting research oriented essay ... brief as in it's just 10k (<2 pdf pages) out of the 25k characters allowed for submission. You've got another 5 days before the submission deadline, so some natural language explication for us nonspecialists in your discipline would have made for a better read, for me at least.

The 3 research paths – de-localisation, spin-coherence and tunnelling – could do with a general intro 'picture' about what you're testing, what the test is, and then what you're looking for ... in terms a general informed audience might be able to hook into. Otherwise, this reads more like a summary for a research funding proposal for specialist readers. Do the same with your methodologies, metrics and outcomes, beef up the conclusion, and then your 'minimalist experimental approach' with its 'fair classical comparisons' would indeed point us nonspecialists towards a way forward with informative outcomes whether the results are positive or null, and in just 6-7 pages of text!

IvoryPeafowl This essay is extremely clear and technically well organised, and I appreciate the authors attempt to lay out concrete ,falsifiable pathways in quantum biology. the modular approach ,pigment networks, radical pair systems, tunnelling assays is well structured and I think scientifically sound. However I did find myself anting more of the "why" behind the program. Much of the essay reads as a procedural list of how to run experiments, but without situating these methods within a broader conceptual motivation. Quantum biology is interesting not only because of what can be measured, but because of what those measurements might mean for living systems. Here the deeper biological or philosophical significance remains implicit. Relatedly ,the focus on minimal systems makes sense experimentally , but the essay doesn't address how results in small testbeds might scale back up to the noisy, redundant, homeostatic complexity of actual organisms. without that bridge, the program feels complete on the technical level but incomplete on the interpretive level. Overall , the essay is concise albeit a bit dry, rigorous, and useful for experimenters , but I would have loved a bit more conceptual discussion to balance the procedural clarity.

I was struck by your description of resonance as the guiding principle for life’s use of quantum effects. It reminded me of an idea I’ve been exploring: whether induced rapid cycles of coherence and decoherence could actually enhance tunneling by allowing probabilities to accumulate over time, rather than requiring continuous coherence.

I considered driving this with coherent phonons or THz radiation, since both can periodically modulate barrier heights or donor–acceptor distances. In theory, maybe that sort of rhythmic “kicking” could act like a swing being pushed at the right frequency — and perhaps speed up processes such as enzyme catalysis, where proton/electron tunneling plays a role.

Does this kind of picture fit what you had in mind when you spoke of resonance? I’d be very interested in whether you see your framework extending to these more mechanistic possibilities.

MagentaBonobo your point about rapid coherence - decoherence cycles potentially enhancing tunnelling rather than suppressing it resonates strongly with a framework I've been developing , which I describe as a resonant coherence driver. in this model, spatial standing waves patterns provide a stable geometry while rhythmic bursts of coherence act as temporal modulators that periodically lower potential barriers. Each cycle allows probability amplitudes to accumulate, creating a kind of field based memory that favours subsequent tunnelling events. Such dynamics could operate across scales , from enzyme catalysis to low energy nuclear systems, implying that natures efficiency may stem less from static order and more from optimised oscillatory timing within noise.
Coherence rediscovered within noise , like a pushed swing at just the right moment.

My main question is regarding the focus on minimal systems. The minimal scale of the experiments, in lengths, in the number of components, and general complexity, are not what we see in living systems. I think the methods described work well to quantify the quantum nature of the phenomena, however will fail to give meaningful insight on the larger more noisy biological level. Consider that any quantum advantage, say in the efficiency of a process, is part of a large stochastic network. Even if the whole process is somehow able to maintain a coherent quantum state, will this extend to the rest of the much larger biological system? Furthermore, if there is any way to achieve quantum advantage in a process, would biology not just always select for that? In that case what is so special about the quantum nature of the phenomena?
