Philosophy and Metaphysics of String Theory

Overview:
This two-day workshop brings together philosophers and physicists to explore metaphysical and philosophical questions in string theory, broadly understood, i.e. including non-perturbative approaches and/or issues related to dualities and holography. In addition to our invited speakers, we are pleased to offer a small number of contributed talk slots for early-career researchers. We especially encourage submissions from members of underrepresented groups. Please note that some financial support might be available on demand.

Call for Abstracts: BLOC graduate workshops in Philosophy of Physics
Submission deadline: 15th of December 2025
Website: BLOC graduate Philosophy of Physics workshop

On 13 April 2026, we will host a graduate conference on philosophy of physics at Balliol College at the University of Oxford. This comes in a series of philosophy of physics graduate conferences hosted by the BLOC (Bristol-London-Oxford-Cambridge) group. Our conference will be a supportive and casual setting to discuss works in progress with other graduate students. We also aim to offer a commentary by a faculty member on each talk before the Q&A.

Submission guidelines:
We invite submissions from graduate students working in any area of the philosophy of physics, broadly construed. To apply, please submit your title and abstract of up to 500 words (excluding references) to this google form by 15 December 2025. Submissions should be suitable for a 30 minutes presentation followed by 30 minutes of discussions.

We especially welcome submissions from graduate students of traditionally excluded or marginalised communities and those studying at UK institutions.

Funding:
Speakers will have their meals (lunch and dinner) covered and we hope to be able to aid with travel expenses within the UK.

Special issue information:

We invite submissions for a Special Issue of Journal of Logical and Algebraic Methods in Programming (JLAMP) dedicated to post-proceedings of the 21st and 22nd editions of the International Conference on Quantum Physics and Logic (QPL 2024 and QPL 2025). Submissions are welcome both from extended versions of papers presented at these conferences and from external contributions within the same thematic scope.

The Special Issue focuses on recent advances at the intersection of quantum computing, logic, and programming languages. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Algebraic and categorical structures in quantum computation and quantum physics
Formal languages, type systems, and semantic methods for quantum programming
Logical frameworks and verification techniques for quantum algorithms and systems
Compositional approaches and process calculi for quantum protocols
Diagrammatic and graphical languages, such as the ZX-calculus
Applications of quantum and quantum-inspired techniques to causality, linguistics, and logic
This Special Issue aims to contribute to the development of the logical and algebraic foundations of quantum computation.
