Here some facts, source world nuclear association.
Nuclear power for civil purposes I think nobody protest against, but the civil purposes are always linked to military dito.
Civil nuclear give us about 10 % of the energy today. It is not THAT much. We could remember the requirements that the energy consumption should decrease by 20 % through technical improvement. So, why do we continue to build new nukes = new problems? The low carbon label is not even low any longer if you include the uranium enrichment procedures, esp.if we must start from seawater soon. Uranium from Australia or Namibia may end up in a reactor in the UAE, having been converted in France, enriched in the Netherlands, deconverted in the UK and fabricated in South Korea....
Then we also have the medical isotopes. About half of the nukes are such research reactors. And over 160 ships, mostly submarines, are propelled by some 200 nuclear reactors.
Nuclear power plants are operational in 32 countries . Through regional transmission grids, many more countries depend in part on nuclear-generated power indirectly. Worldwide we have about 450 plants today. The peak was already in 1990. 55 new nukes are under construction. USA, China, France are the most important countries, followed by Russia and South Korea. Many of the Russian nukes are in the warzone now in Ukraine. They are conquered, no inspection allowed by IAEA. This we need to discuss. What happens if.... is it only threats. This is like terror. Are we hopeless here or can we do something?
