Lorraine Ford
Hi Lorraine,
Thanks, I see things still more clearly now, and I like this general reasoning.
You distinguish three layers of reality in fact, the physical world with measurable quantities like mass, spin, ......the knowledge, which consists of logical relationships for the states, expressed with numbers and categories, and finally the agency, like a response to that knowledge , number jumps and changes.
It is ontologically interesting to consider this knowledge and agency, which are not quite physical because we represent them by symbols, so these symbols are not measurable. It is a logic about the universe and its behaviors, if I can say.
It is a pure computer logic, and it is relevant. The agency is like a process control, if I understand well, with the if and then for the knowledge and the response. I think it is a good analogy for the self-executing logical universe, and it is not material , but is it reducible or not to the material? We need physical structures and an ontological cause, even if we have limitations. If Wheeler is right about It from Bit, then what about the knowers and agents at all levels?
Can we rank the minimal knowledge and agency states? Thus, every time place part of the universe from particles to living beings has a minimal knowledge state and a minimal agency, it is ontologically intriguing. How is this panpsychism, considering our consciousness and the formal logic? We arrive at this duality I explained, Lorraine, about the necessity of physical structures and how we consider the measurements if the informational logic is taken into account , both are important, in fact.
What becomes intriguing is the complexity of emergences, like the neural nets or others, and how we consider this knowledge ontologically and philosophically speaking. The fact of considering knowledge as fundamental is not the problem; the problem is that it emerges from a physical structure. That is why I see this DE as informational, permitting the encoding of the two others, a self-referential system. So knowledge has a physical structure, and it is interesting ontologically in linking with your idea and the duality, because we have a structure of relationships.
The physical informational structures make storage, update, and record ,that gives relevant roads, in my humble opinion, for the logic of physical structures and their motions, oscillations, and volumes also. Negentropy is important, and so we have preservation and a time-life of information and physical structures.Life and consciousness become very interesting in this reasoning, especially when your idea about the three layers of reality is added.
