Life is profoundly quantum, but not in a narrow, constant-by-constant way. This essay proposes the Life-Ratios Hypothesis: biochemistry works when key dimensionless ratios between quantum energies and thermal energy fall in the right range. Heavy water (D₂O) offers a concrete test: doubling hydrogen’s mass shifts those ratios without changing chemistry. If organisms can thrive in D₂O at a predictably higher temperature (and even with deuterium in their biomolecules) it would provide strong evidence that life is governed by quantum-thermal ratios rather than specific constants, expanding where in the cosmos life could plausibly exist.

during the walk the mind wandered around various topics i said to myself at some point if i see the number 71 on a car number i will return

it could be the exception rather than the norm ,

maybe you could maintain only the a small sample of deuterium in vivo at a higher temperature to check for toxicity

A clearer link between life’s functionality and uniquely quantum phenomena is needed. One way to strengthen the argument is to identify biological processes that depend not just on energy scales but on intrinsically quantum features, such as coherence lengths, tunneling rates, or zero-point fluctuations, and then show that the proposed life-ratios constrain these specifically quantum behaviors in a nontrivial way. In other words, the hypothesis would gain depth if the ratios were framed not merely as thermodynamic balances but as boundaries on quantum dynamical processes that classical physics cannot reproduce. This would preserve the centrality of quantum mechanics while still allowing the life-ratios idea to play a meaningful explanatory role.

I agree, the approach is interesting but the specific experiments could be more focused on quantum features. Interesting speculation on other possible forms/speeds/solvents of life.
